About speech

In 2021, the European Parliament established a Special Committee to supervise the BECA Plan. In the past year, it organized several public hearings, published surveys and drafted an official response to the plan in the form of a “REPORT on strengthening Europe in the fight against cancer – towards a comprehensive and coordinated strategy”. It represents the consensus position of the EU’s elected representatives on a range of cancer policy actions.

Strong commitment of European Parliament Members to ensure cancer care for patients remains at the top of the EU health agenda, despite the ongoing COVID- 19 pandemic.

On Wednesday 16 February 2022, the European Parliament voted to adopt the final report of the Special Committee on Beating Cancer (BECA). The report aims to find a comprehensive and coordinated strategy to strengthen the fight against cancer The report makes a range of recommendations to strengthen Europe’s fight against cancer and is structured around 4 main areas: prevention, screening, equitable access to care, and patient support. The vote followed a plenary debate where the full European Parliament debated the report and tabled amendments. The report was adopted by an over-whelming majority of 652 in favor, 15 against and 27 abstentions.
